In the grading profiles you are given the option to have your students graded off of their Gross WPM or their Net WPM. The main difference between the two being that with Net WPM with every error the students make, 1wpm is taken off of their wpm score.
Confusion can come up for students when they are taking timings that are less than 60 seconds, so below is a breakdown of how we determine the Net WPM.
If a student made 1 error on a 15 second timing it would be the equivalent of 4 errors on a 1 minute timing. Net WPM means that the student loses for each error.
So if a student typed 33 GWPM with 1 error here is the breakdown of what their scores would be after using Net WPM.
A 15 second timing the student would get 29(net wpm)/ 1 error.
A 30 second timing the student would get 31(net wpm)/ 1 error.
A 1 minute timing, the student would get 32(net wpm)/ 1 error.
A 2 minute timing, the student would get 32(net wpm)/ error.
